Am i just unlucky? or unskilled? Options

Hi

Ive played poker now for about 4 months on and off (I work a full time job). Recently i have had some pretty bad beats due to experimenting and thinking i have found a table full of smaller fish. To my surprise generally I find myself a smaller fish compared to these ppl.
How long did it take you guys and gals to master the basics etc of Poker?
I know the basics I just struggle to recognise the signs that my opponants have better or worse cards than me.

Try to read other sources in order to get your skills right. Try also to make things work out also by practicing playing. Even poker in facebook can help you out in this one.
